"When I look at these images, I
feel melancholy and pain. I should be able to laugh at that burned pizza,
but I cannot. I look at a time I don’t even remember. Or don’t want to remember. When I look at these
images there is love and laughter in my life. It has been there all the time.
Why didn’t I see it then?”
When Piiroinen moved to Berkeley in 2015
to study there for a year she took her whole family with her. While she was
learning to make a documentary film, she was also learning about herself and
her family. In 'Left Coast' she documents their daily life
openly and realistically but spiced up with humour, sometimes black. The best camera is the one you
have with you and many of the images in 'Left Coast' have been
shot with a cell phone.
