Notes on a Place

Kimmo Metsäranta´s recent works have revolved around themesconcerning our everyday life. He reflects on experiences of daily routines, habits and surroundings. What is meaningful and why, what do we see around us and what do we neglect? These questions Kimmo tries to transform into visual form in a subtle way.

Kimmo, born 1978, lives and works in Helsinki. In his latest body of work Notes on a Place he concentrated on revealing details from a certain city, Helsinki – to break a larger entity into parts. He isolated buildings from each other in an abstract way and by doing that he transformed them from ordinary to significant. He gave them new features and put them on display.

The premise of the work was to observe at my immediate surroundings from a new perspective; to truly look at what seemed to be mundane. I aimed to give weight to the seemingly meaningless, isolate the obvious and raise it to a pedestal. My approach is a poetic one with intent to produce distortions of the obvious. I wanted to turn the ordinary into a small spectacles.

The images are isolated abstractions, modified interpretations, bare structures with only the essentials left. I wanted the images to suggest endless possibilities, to distance themselves from the physical location, to become a monument to something that is not really there. Even though the objects are individual at the same time they represent the city as a whole.

All the images were taken in Helsinki, Finland during 2014 and 2015.
