In Ville Varumo’s series Playground randomness takes over beauty and control. Portraits and still lifes – the classics of visual arts – have been given a new distorted and obscured surface bringing forward a contemporary combination of both delight and melancholy.
The portraits are caught in a different spacetime altogether with Varumo including elements of the more styled and set-up nature of the fashion world context. While the portraits give space for the characters to become their own, the abstracts play with the concept of images being caught between paintings and photographs.
Varumo’s sources of inspiration for this series derive from the Bauhaus Movement and the world of Nintendo games.
