Kreetta Järvenpää’s Prime highlights a flower’s circle of life, concentrating on aging and death as the flower’s prime period. Although fading flowers are not commonly regarded as beautiful, the combination of a fresh, wilting and dried flower – the inevitable circle of life – is intriguing. Birth, bloom, aging and death; the same flower is never in its prime again.
In Prime, Kreetta has created twelve still lives from either one or multiple flowers, sometimes using them to create a whole landscape. Dark backgrounds and fading beauty give her works almost tangible drama and a mystical quality.
Kreetta is fascinated by the overall beauty of flowers and plants, due to their nature as well as their appearance. The beauty of a flower brings joy and sometimes healing, but can also be filled with melancholy tones. Flowers are born pretty, live gorgeously, and die beautifully, a bit differently to us humans.
